Get Moving to Manage Stress
College students everywhere report having too much stress, especially when the semester comes to an end. With countless exams, papers, and everyday life piling on top of each other, time can be too limited for a healthy mindset. Many people don't realize that minimal exercise can help relieve these stressors. According to a survey done by the American Psychological Association, 53% of adults said that exercise made them feel good about themselves, 35% of adults said exercise put them in a good mood, and 30% of adults said they were less stressed when they exercised!
Stress Less, Stay Active
Exercise helps the brain build good neurotransmitters, which give you a mood boost! Hiking, playing a good game of soccer, or even going for a quick run can all help in releasing mood-boosting neurotransmitters.
Meditation Isn't Just for Good Posture
Have you heard of 'mindfulness'? A lot like meditation, it's a psychological process of bringing attention to the present. It's beneficial to people who are stressed or battling anxiety because it takes focus from whatever stressors may be causing problems. Instead, focus is drawn to whatever happening in the moment. For the person in the picture, that might be the breeze blowing by, the smell of nature's clean air, the sounds of birds in the trees, and the warmth of the sun.
Starting with mindfulness is easy. All it takes is staying still in a comfortable pose. Focus on your breathing and let your mind wander through whatever your senses pick up. After a few minutes your mind should be clearer! It can take practice, so look for iOS or Android apps to guide you if you need more help.
